The Manitoba Provincial Belgian draft horse show features the Belgian breed which, is a draft horse breed from the Brabant region of modern Belgium, where it is called the Cheval de trait belge or Flemish: Belgisch Trekpaard or Brabants Trekpaard or Brabander. It is one of the strongest of the heavy breeds.

The Belgian Heavy Draft horse stands between 16.2 and 18 hands (66 and 72 inches) On average the Belgian grows to weigh slightly over 2,000 pounds. Docile and patient in nature, Belgians have thick muscles, and heavier bodies  Although the Flemish horse was black, Belgians are usually bay, chestnut, sorrel, or roan in colour. The head is relatively small and well-shaped.

Until the 1940s, the Belgian and the Brabant were essentially were the same breed. Following World War II, the Brabant in Europe was selectively bred to be thicker bodied and heavier, while in North America, the Belgian was bred to be somewhat taller and lighter bodied. The main use was as a farm horse.

Belgians are still used as working animals, but have also become popular as show horses, and pleasure riding horses.

The Manitoba Provincial Belgian Show exhibits these majestic animals on halter and hitch classes.  Halter Classes are judged on conformation, soundness, balance, form and function, smoothness of body parts, eye appeal and the action of the animal.  Hitch classes are judged on easy of moving as a team, that is relaxed, with alert ears, balanced and responsive to the driver at various gaits.   These horses will have action, headset and have eye appeal.
